The King’s birthday and father’s day is this coming Monday so we celebrated at school today. All week the kids have been making birthday cards, father’s day cards and different pieces of artwork to hang up around the school. This morning a dozen monks came to the English Program and they were greeted by a thousand students all offering various types of food. The monks held out a small bowl in which each student put food. When their bowl was full, which was about every five students, the monk turned around and emptied it into a big bag that was carried by one of the older male students. By the end of their rounds there were at least fifty enormous bags of food, maybe more than that. Before the monks came to English Program they were at Regular Program, which has over three thousand students. I hope they hired a truck for the day because they definitely needed it. I wondered how long it would take the monks to consume all this food and if they even wanted some of the items. I couldn’t picture a monk drinking juice and eating a candy bar and then I realized they probably donate most of it. It was really nice to see the entire school excited about the King’s birthday and the visit by the monks. I wonder why we don’t that amped up about Obama’s birthday, do you even know when it is, because I don’t. Happy Birthday King Bhumibol Adulyadej, thanks for your beautiful country and this long weekend!
